The 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the 25th of April followed by 7.3 magnitude quake two weeks later left Nepal with a death toll of nearly 9,000 and left nearly 3 million people displaced. Challenging terrain and climatic conditions (monsoon and winter) render most of the affected areas difficult to reach.
While billions of dollars have been pledged to rebuild the country, the complicated political situation and the fuel crisis have hampered the already slow rebuilding phase.
INGO’s and the Nepalese people continue to fight on however. According to the latest government figures the earthquake destroyed over 600,000 homes and damaged nearly 300,000. The slow government response has left most to handle the rebuilding operation by themselves. The demolition process is often undertaken with little supervision or expert opinion while using the most basic of tools resulting in higher risk for workers, bystanders and adjacent properties.
