Transmutation
In these images I’ve drawn distinctions between the portrait and persona, allegory and mnemonic states of the photograph. Taking 19th century daguerreotype portraits from over 150 years ago, I’ve photographed these faces, prints the images, then wrapped them physically around a mannequin’s head and re-photographs them, capturing the chance transformations and resulting transmutations and aberrations. In the process of changing dimensional and material states something’s are gained, others are lost, as these people; who may have gone on to live long, full, lives or short, perhaps troubled existences look back at us over an unbridgeable expanse of time.
