When I began taking these portraits, I thought about the frameworks of gender, sexuality, the human experience, and the need for self-expression.
My initial was to investigate womanhood but soon realized that the idea was too restrictive, and found myself wanting to explore the idea of the feminine within a broader view.
I loved the idea of putting the participants into frames, but what they did within the frames, how they dressed, posed, portrayed themselves, was up to them.
This is an ongoing project. These photos are part of what I refer to as my "2nd generation" sessions. I began this photo investigation began with myself and my self-portraits (view on my website at: https://www.sarahkilgallon.com/work/womanhood-50
I then began taking photos of women ages 50 plus when I realized the populations I was excluding.
This project is an outtake of my original idea and fulfills my desire to see the beauty of the feminine in various forms.
