The images in the Rapture series are a metaphor for the transition between life and death. The series depicts the imagined metamorphosis that takes place when passing from one dimension to another: floating in the sky or slipping out of a dress, for example.
In this series I used blue water to represent the sky—as a means to convey weightlessness, freedom, leaving behind the trappings of everyday life (clothing). My hope is that the viewer will be reminded of the transience of life and the mystery of what lies beyond.
The work for this series harkens back to personal experiences that include a recurring dream of floating in the air during which I experienced weightlessness, somersaulting, suspension and peace.
The photographs were created in Seattle, where I live, and North Dakota, where I grew up. I used outdoor swimming pools in the Seattle area to reflect the sky, although in some images, additional clouds (from Seattle and ND) were added in post.
