BATHROOM DISCO is a series of self portraits taken by Emily over a 10 month period during the pandemic.
After having to sell her hard earned hospitality business in order to care for the high needs of her children during the first lockdown, Emily underwent a series of traumatic life events which left her in a vulnerable, isolated and unstable emotional place.
She embarked on various forms of therapy but became increasingly frustrated at the lack of joy and escape in her claustrophobic world. She read somewhere about the psychological benefits of dance and movement and was reminded of her love for dance in life before parenthood.
The following morning Emily set her alarm for an hour earlier than usual and, whilst the rest of her family slept, she took herself to the bathroom with her headphones and danced. Such was the power of the chemical shift within her that she continues to do this every single day.
Armed only with her camera phone for kit and her own self as subject, Emily began to document her bathroom discos. Historically not at all comfortable in front of the lens she embarked on a challenging journey of self exploration and simultaneously was inspired to reach out and reconnect with significant people in her life.
This inner shift and these precious connections have been the catalyst for significant change in Emily’s life and have carved a pathway away towards hope.
Life continues to be challenging but, every day, she is thankful for the dance.
