When we think of "portraits" we don't normally think of "wildlife"... these photos push our boundaries to reconsider what 'portrait' means, as the subject can really be any living creature-- a person, or a moose. A good portrait captures the essence and being of a creature; for example it may capture a window to the soul, or a reflection of the living conditions. This series strives to capture portraits of moose in their environment to show the beauty of these majestic creatures, and the shots were taken during the very difficult yet beautifully dramatic lighting conditions of blue hour, sunrise, and sunset. As these grand animals relocate early morning and late evening, there was an added challenge of following along with their fast pace through thick sage brush and resetting the camera to capture a well-framed portrait. This portfolio was captured over a painstaking 2 weeks of wilderness camping in frigid weather. These are grand animals, each with their own personality and unique existence. While they may not make facial expressions like people, their faces say a lot-- eye contact conveys a feeling, what they look at indicates what they are thinking about, and behavioral actions can outwardly express their internal chemistry. Each of these portraits reflects an experience of that moose in that moment. And when you look into the eye, you can feel the soul of that animal.
