The Organic Abstracts started for me a decade ago. I found myself fascinated by the minuscule landscapes composed of moss and lichen I found on the edges of the urbanscapes I was photographing. I started photographing these small landscape vignettes attracted to the color, texture and graphic quality. The original body of work ended late 2012 and during last year’s quarantine I returned to this subject matter. Focusing on these small abstractions has become part of a meditative practice that I found solace in during the pandemic.
I am approaching this work as one would a series of modern paintings or drawings not only in subject matter but also in printing technique by creating the images on softer paper. Referencing abstract painting or printmaking more than photography and at the same time referring back to my beginnings as an artist before photography became my primary art form this work reflects a stillness and joy through form and color.
