My homeland is a small village in Sichuan, China. Taking pictures of my homeland is both a tool to explore my inner, deeper self, and a way to recognize my parents and the meaning of homeland. So, in the Spring Festival of 2021, I started this project。
In 1990——when I was three years old, Fourth National Census showed that the country's total population was almost 1.2 billion, and the rural population was almost 0.9 billion, accounting for almost 75%。In 2021, Seventh National Census showed that the country's total population was 1.4 billion, and the rural population was almost 0.5 billion, accounting for 35%. So,there were millions of people who had similar experiences with me , but similar experiences didn’t mean the same. I could only express myself.
When I wandered around and took pictures of landscape, the farmland was silent, the sky was silent, and I had a strong sense of loneliness; when I photographed my neighbors and parents, I felt warm. But, I knew that when the holiday was over, most of us would leave. There would be more silent here than I had seen.
In the past,I always had such kind of illusion that homeland which was left behind was always there waiting for me to come back,as eternal as mountains and rivers. But the fact was that my homeland was losing its vitality, aging。Therefore, I chose to use low contrast black and white images to narrate, to tell about the homeland that looked like a ruin, and also about the firelight, wells, and stars in this ruin.
