The inspiration for these works comes from 3 sources. Eliot Porter, Ralph Gibson, and Brett Weston. Especially Ralph Gibson's and Brett Weston's use of flattening perspective to "bring the picture plane forward" to create more "modern" works. ( Im not sure if Porter did this intentionally or not but I know Gibson and Weston did ). This is a technique I often employ to abstract a photograph with the intent to have the viewer take a closer look to what they are seeing. Photography's physics are naturally tied to a 3 point perspective due to the characteristics of lenses and the recording process. To overcome this I"ll look to arrange the compositions using various viewpoints, contrasts, etc to eliminate this perspective creating a flatter photograph where all elements have equal importance..the intent being to make the photograph live its own existence, rather than as a representational copy of "reality".. Of course this can be a goal of more normal 3 point perspective as well and each presents its own challenges to make interesting photographs.
