The Shadow Machine: Exploring the possibility of an imageless photography.
This conceptual project investigates and reimagines what photography might be if the image was no longer regarded as its central component. The ubiquitous nature of contemporary photography results in a tendency to displace agency from the hands of humans towards its inclusion in mechanised vision and automated systems. This investigation responds to this trend by asking what if photography was not bound to the image.
A series of photographic art works have been produced that explore the notion that photographic knowledge is held in its activities instead. Through the rearranging of its elements, photography is presented as the dynamic interactions of its associated objects and practices, that no longer need to emphasise the image as its central element. As an alternative to photographic images, the photographic concepts identified and explored are presented, for the most, through the medium of video.
