Mummering is an incredibly beautiful and bizarre tradition unlike any other that will surely leave a lasting impression on you. As the tradition goes, around Christmas time, a group of friend’s will get dressed up in the most outlandish and random things they can find in their house to create a disguise/outfit. With a few instruments and ugly sticks in hand, this group of mummers will make their way to a half dozen houses throughout the night. The big catch is the homeowner’s have no clue they’re coming or who they are, so when you hear a knock on the door and someone yells “any mummers ‘lowed in?”, you know your night is gonna be turned upside down (in a good way). The homeowner will then have to discover who each person is behind the mask before they can have a drink, sing a few songs and move onto the next home.
This project has been in my head for many years now as my love and fascination for mummering has never wavered. I find their unique, loud and quirky outfits visually intriguing so when I found myself back on the rock for the first time in 13 years, I had to bring this idea to life! Even though I was six months out from mummering season, I found plenty of die hards who were more than happy to dust off their outfits and be a mummer in the summer
