Photosynthesis

These photographs are made with an alternative digital technique where I take screen shots with a smart phone in front-facing mode. All effects are done without filters, digital adjustments, or colored lighting, through a process that frequently causes the pictorial space to decompose. The granulation and blur of traces of objects, such as leaves and bark that I collect from the forest in Virginia, allows for the suspension of logic, which results in a tension between revealing and concealing. The objects are abstracted and obscured, calling attention to the camera’s electronic process and raising questions about perception, impermanence, and the role of photography as documentation.
