Radius

Radius is a psychogeographic exploration of the “detailed emergency planning zone” around the proposed site of Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, UK. With the Sizewell C project and progressive coastal erosion looming, within the context of the climate emergency, it seemed important and urgent to investigate a place which could change irrevocably. Containing many ideas, stories and icons, the 4km Sizewell “detailed emergency planning zone” is charged with meaning: encompassing the great achievements alongside the threats and consequences of the “Anthropocene”. St. Augustine said “…and it is solved by walking” and Iris Murdoch tells us that "attention is rewarded by a knowledge of reality”. By repeatedly walking the 4km radius around the power stations an affinity for 15 “emblematic” sites developed for in-depth exploration. 10 are presented here. The psychogeographic methodology of “standing in place” used by poet Suzannah Evans was used to create what Ana Samoylova calls a “speculative archive” over two years. Using these pictures to accrete cubist layers the objective was to avoid the picturesque and show instead the multiple narratives and complex “reality” of this magnetic area.
