“Dream of a Shadow” is a conceptual project that explores the duality of the human being, living stuck in a materialistic reality, but lured into introspection when nature arises in all its might.
When the island drifts towards cold months, the fabricated image of “dolce vita” fades away. Shot during winter nights, this is the time when darkness unveils the unseen–the mystical side of Capri.
This project stems from my inner loneliness and the struggle to find my place and identity in my youth, caged in beauty by the sea and constantly challenged by the overpowering nature during the long, mighty winters in Capri.
Every winter, the island stares at me, guiding my introspection across its otherworldly masterpiece made of crude rocks, sharp howling wind, growling sea. Day by day, this experience corrodes all the armor that culture built around me as a form of control.
Roaming at night with my camera morphs me into the primeval man, naked in front of the power of nature. Hidden symbols start to arise in my unconscious mind, as I long to capture them with my camera.
In my images there are always symbols that come from beyond, juxtaposed to elements from our reality. Suspended between reality and beyond, this project takes the viewer into a contemplative journey.
The fight between our darkest and brightest side is outlined in the images by the coexistence of the darkest shadows and the brightest light, exploring our inner fight in choosing light -embracing nature- over darkness.
