In February 2023 I was working on a project about legal identity with people in Northern Cyprus and Southern Turkey. During this time two massive 7.8 and 7.7 magnitude earthquakes occurred in Northwest Syria and Southern Turkey. While I had the first part of the project completed in Cyprus it became clear that I could no longer interview and photograph people in Southern Turkey on the topic I was there to work on.
The lives of hundreds of thousands of people were disrupted and devastated in the early hours of February 6th 2023 when the quakes hit.
I decided that rather than pack my bags and head home I would switch gears are look at the people effected by the quakes. I had missed the rescue efforts and breaking news element so I focused on the clean up and recovery effort as well as the relief and aid work that would be needed.
Wanted to speak to the people who's lives were turned upside down and tell their stories.
