Every year on the last Sunday of June, Hundreds of people (if not more) Jump into the fountain at Washington Square Park in celebration of Pride. Coincidentally, this is probably also the largest gathering of street photographers in NYC.
People from all walks of life gather inside the fountain in the highest of spirits, dancing and singing in honor of pride month while photographers navigate through the chaos all whilst trying avoid water damage to their cameras in hopes of capturing the momentous occasion.
Although we are living in very controversial times in regards to the focus of this celebration, hopefully these photos show there is still some fun to be had, and we can all co-exist, even if just for a day in a new york city public parks fountain.
Side note:
These photos come from my perspective, of course. However what makes it special to me is that most of the photos were shot on a small digital camera, inside of a ziplock bag with no display or viewfinder to compose. I had only my hand-eye coordination to rely on, and I am pleasantly surprised with the results. That's a kind of magic usually reserved for film shooters only, but even then you usually get a tiny viewfinder to compose through, at least. But regardless of format, As a street photographer, I can say for alot of us this is one of the, if not the most, anticipated holidays throughout the year... and we're all having fun, shooting together and trying not to damage our tools. Its pretty cool!
