Since 2009, I have been collecting obscure and obsolete words for colors that have been lost to history, are in danger of being lost to history, or just simply should be more in use than they are. My background as an art historian and a fine arts photographer are the inspiration for this series, as was my early career as a watercolor artist. I love words and exploring their history, their usage, and above all making visible through my own photography their specific "lost" color--that, for me, is the most critical part of their definitions. During the pandemic I began posting this series on Instagram, and to date that has been the extent of their visibility. I have around 140 images + definitions completed (and counting)...but I'm always on the lookout for more!
