Fallout

Sean Swann’s series “Fallout” focuses on the impact of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and its long lasting effects on humanity and the surrounding environment. The accident was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the environment. With the deposition of radioactive materials in many parts of Europe, approximately 350,000 people were displaced and forced to leave their homes and everything they knew behind resulting in a dystopian post apocalyptic mood in the surrounding area. Chernobyl is one of the worst man made disasters the world has ever witnessed and has effects that will last long after humankind as It will be another 20,000 years until the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone will be fully habitable in all areas. The eeriness of forgotten children's toys and undertones of the abandoned region have been curated in this gallery to raise awareness of the permanent effects of radiation as nuclear tensions rise across the world
