In summer 2002, I’ve spent a two week summer holiday in La Havana Cuba. At that time, I was travelling with a friend that had no interest at all in photography. In my mind, I couldn’t imagine going to Cuba and coming back without images. That’s why, just before leaving, I’ve decided to buy a lomo photography camera. I had to find a way to take pictures quickly without spending too much time on settings. Then the Pop 9 was the ideal choice. With this camera, a single shot produces nine identical images on one print, slicing your subject into a miniature celebration of pattern-repeating pop art.
When I got there, I was immediately seduced by the Cuban atmosphere, the beautiful American cars on the avenues, the atypical architecture of the town combining past, present and future. Everywhere, a perfect lighting, glaring colours, dancing shadows and warm atmosphere. Ordinary, everyday subjects become extraordinary. I lost myself in the labyrinth of small streets and tried to capture moments. Little by little I came to understand I needed a lifetime and many more films to reveal the mysterious secrets of this amazing town. I will never forget these moments spent in its company.
