As a child, I loved the illustrated book series known as Flower Fairies. The way each fairy lived in harmony with their flower, and the world around them. Living in New York, we have such little connection with the natural world. I wanted to make portraits which challenge that separation, focusing on a tactile interaction between each person and their chosen natural environment. By inserting each person into the environment in an unconventional pose, such as sat in a flower bed, lying on the ground, or nestled in a tree, these photos ask the viewer to consider their own connection to the environment and the invisible barriers that keep them from such contact. Lighting these portraits bestows a magical, otherworldly quality, showing how we could be at one with our environment, in an ideal world.
