William Ropp summons up a strange and haunting world through the lens of his art, but it is not an
altogether unfamiliar one in spite of his showing us people and things we have never before seen. It is unsettling and disturbing, yet it also attracts and compels us because it is beautiful, erotic, and often frightening. His work is rich with the thrill of beauty, sex, and fear, three of humanity’s most powerful drugs. But those narcotics alone are not what we sense in Ropp’s art as familiar. They are only the outer cloaks, the flesh, of something else we know far more intimately.
