In my neighbourhood Winter Solstice is celebrated with 'flare'. For over 20 years the local First Nations people, artists, acrobats, musicians, fire dancers, and street performers have organized a completely non-corporate, non-commercial, hand-made celebration of the 'coming of the light' on the longest day of the year. The multicultural, multi-ethnic, multi-talented residents celebrate in a great show of lights, music and theatre.
Occupying an entirely urban environment, I set out to capture as much of the celebration as possible.
The community of Kensington Market is radically anti-gentrification and has been a welcoming melting pot for immigrants, artists and misfits for generations.
This event is a celebration of diversity and a delight in the chaotic inclusion of all who love to create.
