‘Are You OK?’ is a multi-year documentary project pairing intimate portraits and interviews (both written and recorded) of trans and non-binary youth with supportive families living in the United States who are ready to stand up to political annihilation. As a queer man of trans experience, and someone raised in a family of two Holocaust survivors, this work has become a contemporary archive of the disappearance of my community and a cathartic way to say that I am (and we are) still here. For me, this is a trans survival project.
At a moment in history when legislation is actively and viciously erasing trans people from existence, these stories need to be told in order to create social change. Projects like this must be shared now, before it's too late. This is extremely dangerous work, yet myself and my sitters continue showing up, putting ourselves on the front lines, and fighting for our humanity. This may be the last year work like this can be shown publicly, and I hope you take that into consideration when reviewing the series.
