Moments in Other People’s Houses
This series Moments in Other People’s Houses is about time spent working on estate liquidation and years visiting public estate sales. What is it about a space once inhabited and nurtured now quiet and chaotic or paired down to almost nothing? The energy of the space. We all die or move out of our homes at some point. Some material things we own deteriorate, erode and turn to dust. I’m interested in how light travels across furniture, rooms and windows. Time frames the absence of objects, markings of moved furniture, paintings and footpaths on worn rugs. Sometimes it’s an almost empty space with walls and windows the focus. Sometimes it’s full of decades of stuff spilling out of closets, drawers, rooms, attics and garage. Visually I’m less interested in the objects unless the memories ooze out and I cannot deny it or the object informs the scene or space. Light on a mattress dividing the room. An outline of painting removed, indents on carpet from a couch now in another room. Footpaths worn deep into a rug. Patterns as consistent as time- the routine of life, it’s all there in a house. Clues, energy - the quirky way things connect us, the wealthy and working class have holes in their pajamas, outdated spices and books never read.. Every house is a constant reminder that all is temporary.
