I named this series after a song written and performed by Gloria Trevi, a Mexican pop diva. The lyrics speak of blind love toward a man who is far from perfect, and Gloria desperately carries the chorus to the end of her voice. I was already familiar with the song, but I had never immersed myself so deeply in the passion of the mermaid. After settling in Mexico for a few months, I finally indulged in it.
To be clear, this series is not a documentary about Mexico. Instead of providing a narrative, it seeks to make visible a zone of resonance, exploring the encounter between this country and myself. These images are infused with the pulse of my intimacy and the enigmatic Mexican vitality. Before my departure, I didn’t know that by responding to the call of passion, I would travel to the sorrow of impossible mourning and the hope of life returning.
Cierro los ojos y siento su aliento
Mi sangre quema cualquier pensamiento
(I close my eyes and feel his breath,
My blood burns every thought)
Mexico and I are losing our minds. A flow of sensations, both angsty and generous, runs through us.
