External Iran, unveiling faces & stories

Initially envisioned as “Iranian Ethnic Groups,” External Iran began as an ethnographic project to showcase the beauty of Iranian ethnicities. However, my research urged me to explore the deeper meanings of “Iran” and the essence of being Iranian. This shift prompted me to capture images that reveal more than faces, utilizing diverse perspectives and careful compositions. The project involved analyzing the varied perceptions of “Iran,” shaped by history and personal experiences. As I traveled across cities and villages, I sought the stories of ordinary people, presenting both the beauty and complexities of their lives. Through thoughtful lighting and staged scenes, I aimed to evoke emotions and challenge viewers to reflect on their interpretations. Over a month, we traveled nearly 8,000 kilometers, covering only a fraction of Iran’s vast landscape. This journey revealed the rich cultural tapestry of the country, with each individual contributing to a larger narrative. Ultimately, External Iran embodies my feelings towards my homeland, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions of Iran and its people. This is just the first part of the project, and we aim to continue the rest.
