My first public art project- on the four compass points of Madison's (WI) Capitol Square, two series of photographs, mounted in the spring and fall of 1982, in the new Capitol Concourse kiosks. Placed within view of where they were made, the project title 'In situ' comes from the Latin, meaning "in its original location." Often used in the context of archeological finds, the phrase is used here to describe visual discoveries. Consequently, each of the photographs was displayed in (or very near) its "original location."
The project, funded by grants from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission and the City of Madison (WI), was created to encourage visual interaction with the everyday environment, for the aesthetic enjoyment of pedestrian users of the recently refurbished Capitol Square.
