Bashkir Being is a personal and imaginative photo project inspired by iconic masterpieces of world art. It explores themes rooted in the deep subconscious—identity, ancestry, gender, and cultural heritage. We all perceive the world through the lens of our upbringing, education, culture, and life experience.
This series offers a fantastical reimagining of works by artists such as Michelangelo, Magritte, Frida Kahlo, Gauguin, and Klimt. Yet, it is neither a copy nor a direct interpretation. Rather, it is an attempt to reveal the Bashkir world through its own unique symbols and cultural codes.
The subjects of these photographs are not professional models, but individuals who are deeply connected to and passionate about their native culture. Historically, due to a nomadic lifestyle and Islamic traditions, visual art in Bashkir culture was limited. Instead, the primary forms of artistic expression were national clothing, jewelry, and intangible cultural heritage.
The project cover references Michelangelo’s iconic fresco, while the title alludes to Magritte’s The Son of Man (“Human Being”), underscoring the shared human desire for beauty, creativity, and expression.
Bashkir Being is a reflection on universal human values—common roots, a shared history, and our collective search for meaning. It reminds us: we are all one, we are all equal, we are all beautiful.
