“The Dead Don’t Die” is an ongoing series/project centered around le dias de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead in Mexico. These photos we’re taken in the Patzcuaro region of Mexico in 2023 and 2024. They capture the various festivities and celebrations held around the holiday where the locals celebrate the lives of loves ones lost.
The celebrations and holiday are much more than what many outside of Mexico view it. It’s not only a Halloween celebration where people parade around the streets dressed as skeletons. It’s much, much more. There are various celebrations, parades, feasts, and parties throughout the days before and after the holiday that honor and celebrate the lives of those lost. Rather than a sad experience or mourning they choose to honor the vibrant legacy and spirits of loved ones who have recently passed away.
In this series I tried to capture the emotional layers, intimate rituals, and striking visual symbolism that define this centuries-old tradition. I try to stylistically use my camera as an instrument to highlight the colors, lights, and sounds of this beautiful and vibrant celebration. And to also honor those who have been lost.
