Paris After Marville presents a rephotographic project which has examined the archive of topographic photographs of Paris made by Charles Marville between 1865 and 1877, first under Georges Haussmann and then under the Third Republic. The book Piercing Time: Paris After Marville and Atget 1865-2012 was released in English in October 2013 by Intellect Press (UK) and is distributed by the University of Chicago Press. The book addresses photographic representation of urban history from a number of angles through essays by three authors and contains over 450 reproductions of photographs and maps. Photographs made by Atget of the same locations at the turn of the 20th century were researched by the artist and are included in the book along with his own rephotographs of 183 sites.
The5 year process involved research in the Photography Collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, identification of the Marville sites and photographing with a 4x5 view camera over an extended number of visits to Paris. A set of prints has been donated to the collection of the Musée Carnavalet.
In 2016, an interactive tablet app is being released which includes the Marville photographs, Sramek's contemporary revisits and historical maps along with audio interviews with Parisians about Paris, ambient soundscapes and archival information. Live geolocation access may be used when in Paris.Large and small scale prints and a media installation are available for exhibition, while the book and iPad app can be found online.
