Unsung Heroes in the face of evil
At Panzi Hospital in Bukavu in the province of South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, survivors of sexual violence and women with difficult gyneacological problems get help and treatment. The hospital was founded and is run by the award winning gynaecologist Dr Denis Mukwege. Walking through the grounds of Panzi hospital, the amount of patients waiting to see a nurse, doctor, social worker or psychologist is overwhelming. And the stream of women and girls reaching the hospital after having endured gross sexual violence is not diminishing. The victims are also getting younger. During my stay at the hospital, the youngest patients in need of gyneacological surgery as a result of sexual violence were three years old. Three years old! They had also had babies of three months. This project documents the inside of this world renowned hospital, including the work of varioust categories of staff who all contribute to make this hospital work.
