"De Enige Zoon" ("The Only Son")

Antwerp owes its existence and expansion largely to shipping and fishery. Today the latter is dominated by multinationals plundering the seas and threatening the existence of the small independent fishermen. In Terneuzen, I chanced upon a traditional shrimp trawler (only two remain), that witnessed the evolution of the traditional fishing trade – an evolution that now threatens its very existence. Its name “De Enige Zoon” (‘The Only Son’) predicts a bleak future. My pictures can be seen as a tribute to Antwerp and traditional fishery, paying homage to a dying trade. At the same time I want to indicate that due to above mentioned evolution we have become estranged from the origin of our food.
