A candid series of street images captured in the South African city of Johannesburg. A sprawling metropolis that lacks any organised mass transportation system. The motorcar, bus, bike and taxi are the principal modes of transport and without such, people must walk the streets – a silent, subtle procession largely ignored by the occupants of vehicles passing by.
This body of work aims to capture moments that transcend the static, sharply defined images that we constantly come across – usually hallmarked with breathtaking razor sharpness delivered by the camera sensor capabilities of our age. Instead, I wanted to create a series of images that play with mood, atmosphere, light and colour. The combination of these elements provoking my subconscious recollection of the individuals that I have passed-by every day.
A 35mm lens was used with the same camera type in an effort to capture a visual perspective similar to what we see with the human eye. A sense of motion, smear and tilt have been introduced into a tight vertical space to help break with the static formality of what would otherwise have been an ordinary photographic representation of what is happening on Johannesburg's streets at any particular time of day or night.
