For the past eight years, I have spent countless hours riding and photographing on metro systems around the world. My series of candid photos of ordinary people going about their daily lives provides an intimate glimpse into the variety of human emotions and interactions that occur on this urban stage. These evocative, richly-layered images are reminiscent of still photos from a movie or play. Each scene invites the viewer to contemplate the situation and generate a personal narrative; furthermore, the cinematic sequencing and presentation of the beautifully printed duotone images conveys an even deeper story.
At a time when fewer of the images that we see on a routine basis are honest representations of real life, these photos open a window to the world that actually surrounds us here and now.
My monograph Metro: Scenes from an Urban Stage was published by Daylight Books in May 2016. The hardbound 8 by 10 inch book features fifty duotone images by Stan Raucher from mass transit systems in more than fifteen cities on four continents. The book also includes a Foreword by Ed Kashi and an Essay by Marlaine Glicksman. Since its release, the book has garnered extensive press coverage and numerous accolades, including being selected as one the Best Photography Books of Summer 2016 by American Photo Magazine. http://bit.ly/MetroPr
