Silver gelatin paper is as strong a medium as oil paint or sculpture. In fact it differs from painting or drawing as nothing is added - no paint or pencil is added to the canvas - the paper itself changes through decisions made by the artist. In that way silver gelatin paper is more like sculpture or pottery than painting.
I have had a fascination with portraits for years. This work is an extension of my other luminogram work but takes me into a totally different world - where the string marks made by controlled light are made to represent an aspect or part of reality - to represent the basic fundamentals of the human portrait - which in turn demonstrates the ability of silver gelatin paper to be responsive to new and exciting ways of use.
