A mandala is a spiritual and ritual image used in Indian religions. It is a
symbol for the universe. The word comes from Sanskrit and meant originally circle. In Tibetan Buddhism mandalas are often made out of coloured sand.
A sand mandala can take several weeks to build due to the detailed
patterns. After completion the mandala is liturgically destroyed by releasing the sand into moving natural water, in a ritual symbolizing the transitory nature of material life.
