Before you know it, tomorrow has become one of the many yesterdays barreling down the hill like an avalanche. The avalanche of your life. Even though you try, the moments of yesterday struggle to stay relevant against the onslaught of tomorrows, and you find yourself asking "Wasn't it just Black Friday?" You save coupons under magnets on the refrigerator, and when you finally get around to taking them to the store, most have already expired. Not to be an alarmist, but when was your last oil change?
When I was growing up in Mattapan, there was still a Grange Hall on Cummins Highway, a vestige of its rural past, just beyond the modest Studebaker dealership, which featured a gold Avanti in its showroom. Now occupied by beige apartment buildings and a 24 hour gas station, there is little left besides the cemeteries to evoke the old days.
The pace of change has picked up. The demand for housing is unprecedented.
Properties change hands,rents increase, and empty storefronts become realtors or restaurants to assuage the demands of the growing upwardly mobile populace.
When I discovered that the taco shop could no longer stay in business due to a massive rent increase, and other longtime businesses are considering their options, I decided to try and document the ins and outs of the communities I have lived in for most of my life using the panoramic format to include as much information as possible in each image. In this process, I hope to capture a bit of the rich fabric of familiar people, places and things that I call home.
