JARJEER
THE DONKEY SANCTUARY IN MOROCCO
MOROCCO is a land of mystery, where traditions that are as old as time are still very much a part of the culture.
With travel now easier, and many international visitors, Modern public image conflicts with Traditional harsh reality.
The ‘Beasts of Burden’ are the main source of transport, not only in the souks (markets) but also on the land.
They are worked until they collapse or become sick when they are discarded as useless.
BUT it is time for change, for new thinking, for education.
In the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, there is a refuge for abandoned animals that are too old, too sick or orphans.
JARJEER are committed to the animals’ welfare to exacting standards and to fight against the abuse of working animals and assist their owners.
There is no criticism….
They seek to work with the village people, within the local landscape and with the Berber tradition to introduce preventive care and raise awareness, for enlightenment and education of animal husbandry.
This set of images was taken in 2016 after an invitation to visit and see the work for myself.
The empathy shown between the humans and animals in their care was very much apparent and I will be returning in 2017.
