These images stem from a decade-long ever-evolving series of self-portraits that was concentrated on examining women's issues, yet recently has turned its focus on mental illness. The images represent new, fresh experimentation with my old, established method of working as I search for a visual language for psychotic depression, bordering on schizophrenia, as I have experienced it for myself. Where verbal articulation of abstract mental states remains impossible, the inner space of the lens, where light is constantly refracted, reflected, dusted, flared, blown or blurred out, has proven to be a productive space in which to fix images of distorted mental states.
