When I decided to go to the Caracol de Aventik in Chiapas, Mexico - a territory occupied by the EZLN (National Liberation Zapatista Army) I was told to lower my expectations because there was no assurance I was going to be allowed to enter. So I did and took the "colectivo" (public transport) and after one and a half hours of riding with several indigenous people I was told that we have arrived and drop down. The first thing I saw was a fence and a little bunker with a guard and face covered who asked me what I wanted. So, I told him that I was a photographer and wanted to visit. With his radio he advised other people of my presence and after a few minutes a women with the face covered came to ask me several questions and wrote down my answers and told me to wait. After about 20 minutes, she came back again with additional questions and went away. The third time they told me that I could come in and another person again with the face covered accompany me all the time. These images are a selection of what I could capture, no people with the exception of one photograph of the person that came with me. I do not take side in this conflict, I just document what I was able to see. This is a conflict that has not been resolved and that it is captured in the words of a press release from the EZLN in 1995, "In ourselves, in our armament, in our covered faces, in our word of truth, Zapata joined the wisdom of our oldest ancestors".
