Children's Lives in Village & Town, Eastern Indonesia 1973
I have since retirement a few years ago returned to my earlier interest in photography as a way of documenting people and places. I look for social and cultural connections expressed through depictions of time and place, as explained in my attached "Background Statement". For this project I have selected portraits, mainly of children, from the island of Flores, in eastern Indonesia, where I did research on the marriage system in the early 1970s. My aim is to contrast the lives of children in the villages that surround the small district-centre town of Ruteng.
