There is a horrific beauty to my images—reflections, color, and projections transform my settings into shadowy, menacing, and violent scenes where nightmares meld into reality and memories are warped. In these scenes, I illustrate the lingering pain that results from instances of violence. I base my work on both contemporary and historical examples of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse that’s perpetrated against women. I also draw from my own experiences and use my body as a tool in my art making process. In my images, I place myself in various contexts where I am forced to face my past traumas and the traumas of other women with whom I can identify. In exploring society’s concept of bodily autonomy, I actually reclaim my own autonomy, thus illustrating the fine line between sexual expression and sexual exploitation.
