All these photogram lumens were created during the summer months. I select a plant either from my garden or go further afield to the Downs in Brighton where there is an array of wild flowers, trees and strubs to choose from, I use the language of flowers to inform me of their emotional meaning, trying to capture that feeling in the image I create, placement and layout on the paper are very important. There is inherently an uncertainty in what shapes and colours will be obtained using traditional black and white photographic paper, revealing something different every time. A number of unknown factors are thought to contribute to the outcome and the image formed, but I think there is a purity in the simplicity of the pressed plant image usually archivally fixed for longevity. This camera-less process using photographic paper directly exposed in the sun enables the inner structure of the plants to be exagerated in an impressionistic painterly way exemplifying their traditional 'tussie mussie' meaning in the language of flowers. They are all original, unedited and unique images.
