Eringer cow fights are an important tradition in the southwest part of Switzerland. In this area cow fights have a similar importance as football. In the arena, the female cows are following their natural instinct to figure out the hierarchy and to define the alpha animal in the group. The females must be pregnant to keep them more cautious and to prevent injuries.
Eringer Farmers are hobby farmers. They are working mostly in the tourist industry or in factories nearby. But they are extremely dedicated to their hobby and they spend an enormous effort in it. Every day they have to take care of the cows and feed them two to three hours in the morning and evening including the weekends. In summer time, during the festival season, every weekend is reserved for competitions in different arenas. The cow that wins the competition in the final run is called “la reine des reines” - the queen of the queens - and her farmer is the local hero for one year.
