No Adults Allowed

“No Adults Allowed” deals with the playgrounds of Manhattan, photographed at twilight and devoid of children. Originally begun as a visual inquiry into the concept of a societies fear of predators and it’s obsession with the safety (No Adults Allowed Unaccompanied by a Child, is posted on signs at the gates of NYC playgrounds) shortly after I began the series, New York City experienced 9/11changeing the context of the work and it’s meaning for me. The playgrounds became a visual metaphor for the loss of childlike innocence with a duality of beauty and fear of what might lurk in the shadows. relating to both my own feelings and the feelings of NYC/America post 9/11. The perspective in the images are of a child’s, alone on an empty playground at dusk in obviously city playgrounds with titles that have various references to the adult mind - playing and balancing between the feelings and fear of the child within each of us. This series was photographed between the years of 2001 and 2005.
