This is my personal story showing my father's life with dementia.
After a fall and a delusional event outside the front door of their house, I had to call for an ambulance. There were obvious signs of an injury as a result of the fall. It was impossible for him to communicate if there were any other areas of pain or injury. After various X-Rays his behaviour began to change. Completely out of character he waved people away, swore, spat out tablets, desperately pleaded for toilet trips. This increased agitated behaviour resulted in sedation. As the disease takes its toll he refuses to eat or drink, increasing his problems.
As I queue for the car park during visiting hours it makes you realise the number of people relying on the NHS for care and support in their time of need and this is just one hospital. With approximately 800,000 people currently diagnosed with dementia in the UK and an ageing population you have to wonder how we can continue to support people with the care and dignity they deserve in their remaining years.
