I can think of no more stirring symbol of man’s humanity to man than a fire engine.” - Kurt Vonnegut The Volunteer fire service is deeply rooted in American history and tradition. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Samuel Adams were all Volunteer firefighters. Benjamin Franklin is known as the father of American Volunteer firefighting when he started the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia. Many of the history’s greatest fires known were extinguished by volunteer firefighters. For 85% of the United States today, when an emergency happens, be it fire, car accident, or medical emergency, volunteer firefighters are often the communities first line of defense. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans work more than any other industrialized nation in the world, but there are still Americans willing to sacrifice their precious time they have to give back to their communities and to help their fellow neighbors.
