Jagged is an ongoing project that I started when moving to Christchurch, New Zealand in 2014. The once charming city had been devastated in two massive earthquakes, its core pulverised and then subsequently bulldozed to the ground. Being there was like living on a giant construction site. Everything in the city is about the rebuild – finding adequate housing, dodging potholes and traffic cones, navigating in a constantly changing urban landscape bereft of landmarks.
The series of truncated, jagged panoramas capture the disrupted sense of space and time, the anxiety, uncertainty and anticipation that one experiences in Christchurch. I use deliberate distortion, subverted and confusing perspective to give a sense of dissipating continuity, rendering a personal view on the good, the bad and the ugly of this fascinating place.
