This series was produced in 2017 during 15 days spent in the rural area of Pernambuco State in Brazil. By the time I was there, the region was going trough one of the most severe drouths ever, the hadn't their regular rain cycle for 6 years and the people were struggling for their most basic needs. The essay/portrait is just a glimpse of a complex context formed by Brazilian history of encounters between colonization, slavery, local and global culture and a powerful natural environment, a glimmer of a place that knows only sunny days and because of that lives in the shadows both literally and metaphorically.
