Against Nature: London Photo50

Nine artists have been selected for the next edition of Photo50 at London Art Fair 2015. Entitled ‘Against Nature’, the exhibition is curated by Sheyi Bankale of Next Level Projects. Photo50 provides a critical forum for examining some of the most distinctive elements of current photographic practice. ‘Against Nature’ poses a series of questions that consider what it is to look at and display a photograph, and how a photograph can become elevated to the status of an object, act or intervention. Sheyi Bankale says: “The exhibition takes its title from the novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans and will explore the possibilities of how we relate to renewed storytelling within the photographic medium, blurring the boundary between the tangible object and the aesthetic plain.” Comprising of distinct installations including a variety of photographic forms, emotive subjects and appropriated materials in constructed scenarios, ‘Against Nature’ will include work by Jonny Briggs, Thorsten Brinkmann, Adad Hannah, Nikolai Ishchuk, Andrew Lacon, Tom Lovelace, Julio Galeote, Hassan Hajjaj and Darren Harvey-Regan.Tom Lovelace works at the intersection of photography, sculpture and performance, while Andrew Lacon's practice adopts photographic methods and theories to create an often sculptural outcome. Thorsten Brinkmann’s ‘photo assemblages’ incorporate staged photos in which he plays the leading role, whilst always remaining unnoticed or unrecognisable; through his video-recorded tableaux vivants, Adad Hannah explores the nexus of photography, video and performance and how the human body occupies this space. Alongside Photo50, contemporary photography is widely exhibited throughout London Art Fair by galleries including 21ST Editions, Andipa Gallery, BREESE LITTLE, Flowers Gallery, Galerie Rothamel, Hamburg Kennedy Photographs, James Hyman Gallery, Oliver Sears Gallery and Purdy Hicks Gallery.
